George Weil & Sons were formed in 1893 as a business to import and sell silk fabric linings to the fur trade, used for making fur coats. They were originally located below St Pauls by the Thames wharf where furs were unloaded. The business prospered through both world wars and up to the point where wearing furs became unpopular.
At that point the business moved to the ‘rag trade’ area behind Oxford Street, now supplying the dress trade with linings for women’s clothing. Fabric printing for dress fabric increased in popularity and one method used was silk screen printing. Increasingly fabric paints were being used for couture designs and for theatrical productions, these were added to the product range. The imported silk fabrics were also being sold to local screen printers.
